Winding Up

This is a soundtrack for an imaginary game as a submission for the OST Composing Jam #7.

You play as Jeronimo, an obsessive inventor whose work and strict routine encompasses his world. The game is rhythm game set in a steampunk world, where you press keys following the pattern displayed on the screen. Every time you press a key, your screen cuts to Jeronimo completing an action such as taking a step, swinging your hammmer or eating food. It's similar to the filmmaker Edgar Wright's quick cuts.

In addition to that, this soundtrack is written from the perspective of Jeronimo so the sounds you hear may not all be accurate, they are a representation of Jeronimo's perception of the world during this difficult period.

Track 1 - Jeronimo's World

You play through Jeronimo's daily routine, where he works best once he gets into a rhythm of work and rest. The instrumentation changes as he travels to different places, but the notes played give you a hint of where his mind is at. At the end of the track, Jeronimo receives a call from his brother. He says that their father is in poor health and may not have much time left. His father abandoned him and his brother when they were children, leaving their aunt to take care of them.

Track 2 - Buried in Work

Jeronimo refuses to see or talk to his father and tries to get back to work and his routine. However, his brother is persistent, and keeps trying to convince him to say his goodbyes. Jeronimo eventually loses his patience and disconnects the phone, but is unable to quell his frustration. He attempts to work even harder to not think about it. Eventually, he collapses from exhaustion. There are dissonant sounds to varying degrees littered throughout the track to represent the Jeronimo's frustration as he bottles up all his feelings.

Track 3 - Word Processing

Jeronimo wakes up in a hospital bed. A friend called for an ambulance when he found him on the floor his workshop. Jeronimo rests and contemplates his feelings towards his father. Once he has recovered, he sets off for his workshop. He slowly approaches his rotary phone and calls his father at the hospital. He finally says what he has wanted to say all his life, and then says his goodbye.
